In a Twitter message Wednesday, the group said they left the original Flat Earth Society to form their own over irreconcilable differences. The society that squared off with Musk on Wednesday is the off-shoot society. In fact, in 2013, the Flat Earth Society broke in two, with each calling itself the Flat Earth Society.
There are competing sub-theories and competing organizations that purport to speak on behalf of the movement. Some believers even insist on being called Flatists, since the term Flat Earther has become synonymous with goofy Internet conspiracy theory. There are the hardcore believers making lengthy YouTube videos and then there are the jaunty quizzers who seem more amused with asking the question than with getting evangelical about the answer.
It’s worth noting that the Flat Earth movement is deeply fractured. “But we’re also the only (known) body to harbour intelligent life.” Earth, then, is “the only flat celestial body to have been found so far, at least,” wrote the society that took on Musk. They exist inside “the firmament” – a loosely defined boundary that encloses the flat surface of the Earth like a bubble. While the theory claims the Earth is flat and the entire concept of a round Earth is a sham concocted by nefarious global elites, most Flat Earthers accept that the rest of the planets are indeed round.
But Wednesday’s debate revealed a less-known facet of the theory. “We hope you have a fantastic day!”įor those unfamiliar with the much-maligned theory, Flat Earthers believe all photo evidence of the Earth as round has been doctored. The answer came from one of two official Flat Earth Societies: “Unlike the Earth, Mars has been observed to be round,” read the tweet from a verified account.
